Splitsen is een basisvaardigheid in het rekenonderwijs. Het kunnen splitsen van getallen is cruciaal als kinderen grotere getalbewerkingen gaan leren. Een voorbeeld hiervan is als kinderen in groep 4 over het tiental leren rekenen, zoals 8+6. Hiervoor is het nodig dat ze snappen dat je de 6 in 2 en 4 kunt splitsen. Eerst doe je dan 8+2 en dan nog 4 erbij. Hoe groter de getallen worden, hoe belangrijker het is dat de splitsingen onder de 10 volledig geautomatiseerd zijn.
